A poem inspired by a quote by Mencius

“Truth uttered before its time is always dangerous”. This quote by Mencius, a Chinese philosopher who is the most famous Confucian after Confucius himself, touched me deeply and instantly, and inspired this poem…

Premature Truth

Sometimes it’s what you say

Sometimes it’s when you say it

The truth is precious essence

But not when poured too soon

Away it’s chasing streams

Of tenderness, of magic

And leaving those consumed

Perplexed, and as naive

The mind of someone else-

A labyrinth of feelings

You want to play the game

But know that you can’t win

You just have to accept

Discern the way of wisdom

The pain you feel inside

Will leave you more divine
